For the most part, your car will take care of itself, but it does require periodic maintenance. The most important thing you can do for your vehicle is to make sure its oil is changed regularly. While every 3,000 miles used to be the rule when it came to changing oil, that isn’t necessarily the case anymore. So, how do you know when your car is due? Our Mercedes-Benz service specialists are here to share some warning signs to look out for.

Rumbling or Knocking Sounds

Oil provides essential lubrication to all moving engine parts. If there isn’t enough oil or it’s old, the metal parts will rub against one another, which could cause some unusual sounds like knocking or rumbling.

Bad Smells

While you may not know what oil smells like, if there’s a strange aroma in your car (and it’s not exhaust fumes or gas, which could indicate another problem), it’s worth checking out. If it is oil, you could have a leak.

Dark Oil

If you want to check things out for yourself, take note of the color of your oil. Clean oil is light brown in color, but if you see a dark or dirty-looking fluid when you pull out the dipstick, this immediately lets you know that you need a change.

Oil Change Light

The nice thing about new Mercedes-Benz models is that they’ll tell you when it’s time for an oil change. While it may be tempting to ignore that little oil change light when it comes on, you’re putting your vehicle at risk for a major repair down the road if you do.
